Newcomer Eric Church, the pride of Granite Falls, North Carolina, arrives with his first album--on which he wrote or co-wrote all 12 cuts--as a man worth watching. Sinners Like Me puts down roots in traditional country, and judging from its first single ("How 'Bout You"), Church might seem like a modern-day Charlie Daniels, crowing about blue-collar pride and covering his heart "when they fly that red, white, and blue." But several songs show him to be acutely aware of class lines and how the country is divided more into haves and have-nots than red and blue, and Church is no jingoistic redneck. He doesn't shy away from controversial subjects--the capital punishment of "Lightning" and the casual sex/pregnancy of "Two Pink Lines" may bring Steve Earle to mind--and his thoughtful, sensitive, and well-crafted songs, delivered in a hard-bitten baritone, show him to be as much poet as patriot. If "Pledge Allegiance to the Hag" (featuring a cameo by Merle Haggard himself) seems a bit too easy a reach, "The Hard Way," about the kind of regrets that forever haunt one's dreams, finds this Church spreading the much-needed gospel of honor and accountability. An impressive debut. --Alanna Nash

4Sinners Like Me  Jul 12, 2008
A surprising good album. Some feel good songs, others have powerful lyrics
which drag you in.A total package.

5Don't skip this chance  May 10, 2008
Guys....this is a must have. I got hooked on one of his songs and came looking for more. There is not a bad somg on this album. Lots of fun Gary Allen like songs, with a hint or two of George Strait and Randy Travis mixed together.

Anyhow....get all of the songs, don't get one and kick yourself when you love it and want more.

5Really Good Even After Repeated Listening  Mar 06, 2008
I am not a professed music expert, but this is one of the best CDs I have bought in years. I have listened to it many times with small breaks in between and it just doesn't get old. The Christian undertone from an "every guy" perspective is a refreshing change to the "me, me, me" attitude of many popular people. It's worth it for country fans. =-)

5Another live performance inspired purchase  Dec 10, 2007
The first time I saw Eric Chuch play you couldn't cram another person in the bar and there were charter busses liningh the parking lot of the bar I work in. I had no idea who he was just a song or two and that he was semi-local.

After that show I had the album and was sold. He put on one of the best shows I have seen in the last year and then on his return duplicated the first effort. His energy and sincerity are genuine. The emotions behind is songs come through and his passion for music are evident.

This CD has loads of depth, covers several sobject matters of life, and feels like you are going through a bit of his life. Case in point, these boots reveal a journey through life and lessons learned. Two pink lines is an upbeat reminder of how life can throw you a curve ball and sometimes you get a strike but you aren't out quite yet. While not the most lyrically deep album I have ever heard there is still depth in the music.
