Wow, Wow, and Wow Again! Jan 25, 2008
I've been a Mark Chesnutt fan since the early 90s, and I've always loved his voice, with his gravely blend of tenderness and tough-guy. But this album is a cherished gift! Ever song is perfect, especially "Beer Bait and Ammo," "Don't Ruin It For The Rest Of Us," and the impossible-to-get-out-of-your-head "Lord Loves The Drinkin' Man." I may be a Jersey girl, but I know real honky-tonk, real country, and real musical passion, and this album is packed with all three. It's a sin that the country music establishment seems determined to promote po-country tripe like Kelly Pickler and Carrie Underwood, and keep Mark -- a hit-maker from way back -- off the charts and radio. I hope one day he's given the accolades he deserves -- Mark Chesnutt is the heart and soul of country music. Give him a listen.

This is much better than the pop country junk being done now. I bought this CD to help save the honky tonk. This music is great and its nice to hear Mark Chesnutt making music again. I grew up listening to him when country music was about the hurt and the pain, the good times and the bad. It wasnt to long ago either ,if you like honest country music buy this CD.

Mark Chesnutt is about the best honky tonk singer in the business, end of story. This CD marks his return to good old-fashioned country. As for the reviewer who said this CD has "more than enough Nashville gloss to smooth off the rough edges of real honky tonk"--we don't want "Nashville gloss"!

This CD contains plenty of real country music, especially "Somebody Save the Honky Tonks," "Don't Ruin It For the Rest of Us," "My Best Drinkin'," and two Kevin Fowler covers, "The Lord Loves The Drinkin' Man" and "Beer, Bait and Ammo." These songs are stone cold country; they're not Kenny, Toby, Keith and all rest of the pathetic country pretenders.

There are a couple duds here. "I'm A Saint" and "What Are We Doing In Love" are no more than generic songs any so-called country singer could put out.

But all in all, this is one hell of a honky tonk CD.

The King's back. The Grace of the gods of honky tonk has blessed Mark Chetnutt with these 15 outstanding songs. It started with a dream, it ended up with an album.He had mentioned it during the 2003 Gstaad festival, he wanted to make an album with which he could completely identify. One year later he released an album in which he is excellent, surrounded by first-class musicians, like Brent Mason, Larry Franklin and Glenn Worf among others, a real army serving for the Honky Tonk. 15 top-notch songs, where new songs and old ones go together, perfectly well. You judge : "The Lord loves the drinking man" and "Beer, bait and ammo" by the great Kevin Fowler or "Don't ruin it for the rest of us (already on the last album by the equally great Joe Nichols) for the most recent ones. "You can't do me this way" or "Would these arms be in your way" for the oldies. Buy this album by the dozen and hand it out around you, to your friends, your buddies at work, your enemies, well everybody, you'll do them a favour. Makes me Wanna go to a Honky Tonk Feb 09, 2006
On the same day, I bought this album and the Daryle Singletary album, "That's Why I Sing This Way". It was a Great day for music at my house. Both are superb country albums. Here, Mark manages to put and keep the listener in a good mood. The title track, The Lord Loves The Drinkin Man, and Beer, Bait and Ammo are absolutely wonderful. The musicianship is flawless and Mark's voice is pure country. The songs just make you wanna jump in your truck and head down to the local watering hole and knock back a few...while feeding endless funds into the jukebox. The slower, more sentimental songs on the album are very well done too...although I must admit I prefer the Honky Tonk offerings. Saint and Think Like a Woman are also great. My husband, who thinks country music is a torment sent to Earth by God, like the Locusts or the Floods, even likes most of this album. It's fun lovin' country at it's best. Buy it and play it loud.
